Introducing “Helen” {CrossFit FAQ}

Happy Labor Day!

Last Wednesday I met Helen- I have been meaning to post about this WOD but needed to recover first.

When I saw Helen on www.crossfitroseburg.com that morning, I thought oh, no another one of “the girls.” I was excited and a tad worried I wouldn’t be able to finish… so, I resorted to my tactic of BLOCK IT OUT and just show up.

This is one of my tactics for getting through something physically or mentally demanding.  I block it out beforehand, just show up and then take it one step at a time. Afterward, I try not to think about how tough it was, instead I focus on the accomplishment of finishing, or just tie the experience to something else that made me smile that day.

This tactic got me through a year of chemotherapy. I blocked it out until the treatment was over, and then attempted to take a run (even if it was only a slow mile or a walk.) Running is something I love so the run gave me an accomplishment to tie my day to-the rest I just ignored.

Weird I know, but whatever works!

Helen was furious.  She represents the 2nd of the several Benchmark WOD’s known as “the girls”  that I have met. Trust me her buddy “Eva” was no treat either.  Both of these WOD’s kicked my butt right out of any  “comfort zone” I may have been in.

21 KB Swings 53/35
12 Pull-ups

We also had a judge watching to be sure we didn’t loose count.. 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 12 DONE!  hahahaha.

I actually tried to switch from the 35 pd kettle bell down to a 25 after round 2 but… no dice-I think Dave may have actually rolled his eyes, he spoke right up and said “no way, you have to slow down and stick with the 35 pounder”  Damn! Hey, it’s human nature – I was trying to get comfortable.

Seriously, the pull-ups were what killed me! I think I spent 1/2 of the WOD time on the darn pull-ups even with a band. I need the green one..

Helen hath fury…I found this video of the WOD on YOUTUBE Helen Video, pretty cool to watch.. this girl did her 400m in like 1:05 or something crazy.

Another “tactic” I use before a tough workout is to get myself all pumped up- with CrossFit, that can easily end something like this;

Looking forward to tomorrow, with the race and long weekend I have not been to CrossFit in 5 days and feel myself slipping back into my comfort zone.

Question of the Day:

Have you met “Helen” or her pal “Eva”?  What is your recollection of the WOD?

I think I just blocked the day out altogether…. I can’t even remember it.. hahaha.
